Our Answer to Prayer! (and a little blogging break)

After 4 years of ups & downs, a few tears of joy & hope but many more of sadness, frustration, & even anger, our roller coaster of a ride feels like it's finally coming to an end.......or maybe I should say the ride is just beginning.

You see, it all began about 4 years ago when my hubby & I decided we wanted to have a baby.  We had just moved into our newly built house & it seemed like the perfect time.........but our timing isn't always God's timing.   Already knowing that I struggled with polycystic ovaries, I knew that it would be a bit of a struggle.  But I don't think you can ever really prepare for this roller coaster.

In August of 2009, a little over two years after this journey began, I went to the doctor after not feeling so well.  The diagnosis: an infection & pregnancy!  I'll never forget when the PA came in & told me.  After two years of negative testing, I was in shock.  Immediately calling my husband & family, I had to repeat myself several times because they couldn't understand me through the heavy tears of joy!  Like I said, that moment of joy & hope will forever be etched in my memory.  But unfortunately, the tears of joy were quickly exchanged for tears of sorrow, as I began to have complications, & slowly miscarried over about a 4 week period, the whole time praying & clinging to hope that it would somehow be okay.

I didn't understand.  How could God answer our prayer, only to allow us to lose that baby?  My hubby, trying to be encouraging, reminded me that maybe God had allowed the pregnancy to give us the hope that it was possible for us to have a baby.  While I understood that, I still struggled with understanding why I couldn't have that baby.  And, to add to it, the baby's due date was my birthday, which also happened to be Mother's Day that next year.  (What a difficult day that was!)  Over the course of the next few months, I struggled with grief......sadness, disappointment, & even anger.......it's amazing how much you can love & grieve for someone you've never even met.  Yeah, I understand, there could have been something wrong with the baby, it might not have been God's will or timing, & God knows best.....I get all of those things.....but I think there will always be a part of me that struggles with understanding.

But besides the little glimmer of hope, another good came out of it.  Up 'til then, I hadn't told anyone about our struggle with infertility.  I was embarrassed, ashamed, felt like it was my fault.......but one thing that the pregnancy & subsequent miscarriage did was to help me to finally open up.   In fact, I found that the more I told my story, the more it helped me to heal.......and I found more & more people along the way that had also struggled with infertility or the loss of a baby.  (Unfortunately, it is so often a grief that is overlooked or minimized in our society).

So another year & a half went by.  I guess since I had gotten pregnant on my own once before, I kept expecting that it would just happen again eventually.  But as time went on, I began to lose hope, as well as feel a little pressured by the fact that we weren't getting any younger.  So in February of this year, I finally decided to see a specialist in OKC.......who just happens to be one of the top fertility specialists in the nation.  During our initial consult with the doctor, he explained that he felt we were a pretty straight forward case......so much so that he didn't even do any testing.  In fact, when I asked about more testing, his response was that he'd rather us save that money to use for our baby!  My hope was beginning to return.

He explained that because I had gotten pregnant before, he felt like it wouldn't take much, & that I just needed a little push.  So I began the rounds of Clomid.  The first dose of 50mg did nothing for me.  Discouraged when I returned to the doctor the next month, he simply told me not to worry that they're just trying to find the lowest dose that works, & often 50 isn't enough.  So, the next time around, he upped it to 100mg.  Good & bad news: it did it's job, but I wasn't pregant.  While he didn't have an explanation for me, he encouraged me to not be discouraged & said we'd give it 2 or 3 more months.  So we began round 3.

On Saturday, June 4, I was at home alone as my husband was working.  I had told him that I wouldn't test for at least a few more days.  You see, this medicine had made me sick in the previous months, much like pregnancy symptoms.  Once again, I was having the same symptoms, but I didn't want to read too much into it.  I was tired of getting my hopes up, only to be disappointed when the "Not Pregnant" came up on my test.  The only difference this time is that I had one more symptom: I was so tired!  But I thought it could just be the sudden heat wave we'd been experiencing.

So back to that Saturday, as I was at home, blogging no less, I suddenly felt really sick.  "Okay," I thought, "I should just go take the test & get it over with, & get one more month of wondering behind me."  Besides, I'd much rather have my "crying spell" when I was by myself & not during the work week just before work, as I had done so many times before.  Now you have to understand, after 4 years, I had yet to actually see a positive test.  (When I was pregnant before, if you remember, I found out at the doctor, & never took a home test.)  So a little before 1pm, on what turned out to be one of the best days of my life, I took the test, by this time fully expecting the big "Not Pregnant."  But something magical happened.  After only a few seconds of flashing, the most beautiful word in the world popped up, "PREGNANT."

I began shaking & crying with excitement, thanking God for answering our prayer!  I couldn't believe it!  Was this really happening?  When I finally pulled myself together, I began to come up with a plan of how to tell my husband.  I wrapped up the test & decided to wait until he got home.  Unfortunately, what I thought was going to be a 5 hour wait turned into a 8 hour wait, as he had to work a little later that night.  I was so anxious, trying to pass the time by doing things around the house, but I often found myself pacing & repeatedly looking out the front window to see if he was pulling up.

When he finally got home, I could hardly wait for him to get in the house before giving him my "gift".  He was so excited as well, but like me, a little nervous & cautious, because of the previous miscarriage.  We told family & a few friends but decided to wait to "announce" it until after our first ultrasound.  Throughout the next 3 weeks, I had multiple blood tests done, all of which came back great.  I could hardly wait for the Monday, the 27th to get here.......that would be the day we'd first see a glimpse of our little miracle.

We anxiously drove together to the dr.'s office on that Monday morning, super excited, but still a little nervous.  And what we saw & heard was the most beautiful, miraculous thing I have ever seen or heard.  Our baby, now 7 weeks along, had a strong heartbeat of 152 bpm.  The dr. said it looked great!  I don't think I'll ever forget those few seconds, watching that little heartbeat flicker & listening to it!  What a miracle God has given us......He has answered our prayer!

While I normally don't get too personal in my blog, I decided to share this for a couple reasons.  For one, I can't help but give God the glory for this little life inside of me.  And two, my desire is that it brings hope to someone out there who reads it.  Infertility & miscarriage are so common, but unfortunately those who go through it, often feel all alone.  I want God to use my story to bring hope & encouragement to others.

Having said all of that, I also wanted to share that the last couple of weeks I've greatly struggled with my blogging.  Normally my problem is that I have a ton of ideas but not enough time to do them all, but now, my problem is that I don't have the energy!!  Between the nausea & fatique (but I'm not complaining :) ), I find myself coming home from work & pretty much going straight to bed.  So what little energy & time I do have is spent on the bare necessities.  So I ask that you bear with me as I take a little blogging break.  I may still have a post here & there over the next few weeks (in fact, I have one or two ready to go at some point), but it definitely won't be my normal 4-5/week.  But I promise at some point I'll be back in full-force.  I have too  many ideas not to!  And of course, I'll have to eventually share the transformation of my craft room into a baby nursery!

Thank you to all of you for support.  I've been blogging just short of 5 months now, & was ecstatic last week when I reached & surpassed 100 followers.  I am truly honored to have so many interested in my blog, & treasure each & every one of you.

I ask that you keep me & the baby in your prayers, & I promise, as soon as I have a little more energy (hopefully in the next month or two), you'll see me again.  God bless!

More {or Less} of Me Monday: Week 1

Since I've noticed that I rarely have anything to blog about on "More of Me Monday", I've decided that it would be the perfect opportunity for me to share about my journey to better health & weight loss.   My weight & health is something I constantly struggle with.....as Paul says in II Corintians 12, it is one of those "thorns in my flesh."

You see, I struggle with something called "Insulin Resistance," a condition in which my body does not effeciently process sugars and other carbohydrates.  To put it simply, when I eat carbohydrates, my body produces insulin as it should, but rather than allowing the insulin in to break down the carbohydrates appropriately, my cells have become "resistant" to the insulin.....they just won't let it in.  In response to that, my body produces more and more insulin until it is finally able to break down the carbohydrates.  Unfortunately, all this extra insulin floating around in my body is turned into fat.  Nice, huh?
And as a bonus, the more weight I gain, the worse the insulin resistance becomes, which causes me to gain more weigh, and the cycle continues.

While I know this and know how to best control it, unfortunately I don't always do it well, and the weight comes on rather quickly.  This extra weight bogs me down in several weighs ways, as I'm sure some of you can relate to.  Not only do I not have as much energy to do the things I enjoy, but I often get depressed, not liking the weigh way I look or how my clothes fit.  This poor image of myself then keeps me from doing other things I enjoy, like participating in social events.  So not only is losing weight important for me to be healthy physically, but it's also important for my mental health!  I know that if there's a little less of me physically, then there will be more of me in other ways......more confidence, more energy, more peace of mind, more enjoyment of life, etc.  {Thus the title "More {or Less} of me."}

Wow, just having shared this much is a huge step for me.  For years, and even sometimes still now, I was embarrassed and ashamed of my struggle with Insulin Resistance & didn't want anyone to know.  But I've found that there is something freeing in sharing it with others.  I also feel that in sharing my ups & downs and struggles with others and by blogging about my weight loss journey, that maybe it will also hold me accountable to some degree.  Perhaps it will be helpful to someone out there in blogland, too.  If not, feel free to skip these posts.  I won't be offended. :)

So my plan is to share my {fairly} low-carb menu plan for the week each Monday {this will help me be more organized, too!}, along with my exercise schedule.  I will also share how well I followed the plan the previous week & weight loss for the week.

More of Me Monday: Sensing My Senses

The last couple weeks I've noticed a trend, and it occurred to me that maybe God was wanting me to learn something from it.  You see, I've encountered several individuals over the course of the last couple weeks who, due to some physical ailment or another, have either lost or damaged one of their senses or a limb.  For instance, my grandma was recently diagnosed with glaucoma, which has left her struggling to see clearly.  A precious friend, who has a disease that causes multiple non-cancerous brain tumors, just underwent another brain surgery.  She has had multiple surgeries in her life, many impairing her vision and hearing, but she amazingly is one of the most positive people I know and has a wonderful testimony for the Lord.  I also recently met a young lady who only has one leg (and that was the least of her losses!).  It's amazing that all these things were going on around me, but it took a trip to the dentist to really make me stop and think about it......

A few days ago, as I already mentioned, I made a trip to the dentist to get a filling.  As you might know, the numbness stays for a few hours, which caused me to talk funny and even bite my tongue a time or two.  While this was obviously minor and temporary, it got me to thinking how amazing our senses are and how much they're taken for granted.  Can you imagine how life would be without the ability to see or to hear?  Or what about the sense of touch?  How hard would it be to do normal everyday activities?  God really did think of everything!

Then God brought to mind all of the individuals in my life who had been struggling with a loss of one or more of their senses or the loss of a limb.  And it reminded of just how blessed I am!  It's so easy to go day-to-day and take all of those things for granted, but God reminded that they are all gifts from Him!  As I continued thinking, my mind went from blessing to blessing (and I'm sure it wasn't even a fraction of all that God has blessed me with!).  And I couldn't help but have a smile on my face and a song in my heart!  God is good!  I'm praying that God continually helps me to see all the blessings He has given to me!

And speaking of senses, I have one more thought to share. I believe that God also gives us a sense of humor, perhaps to help us through the difficult times.  I have a dry sense of humor, much like my dad.  I like to think of it as quick-witted, although others may disagree :).  So I have to share a quick story.  (Keep in mind my dry sense of humor).

After my dentist took care of my filling, he needed to take impressions of both my upper & lower teeth.  If you're not familiar with what that is, basically they fill a small tray-like structure with what I call "pink goo" and squish it into your mouth.....not exactly the funnest thing to do.  He did the bottom teeth first, left the room for a short time, then returned to do the top.  Again he left the room, returning a short time later to apologetically tell me that this is the first time ever that they didn't turn out and he had to re-do them.  Again, he began with the bottom teeth, left and came back, and followed with the top.  He left the room once more and returned shortly, with a very apologetic look on his face.  By now I had the "pink goo" all over my face and even in my hair.  I'm sure I was quite a site!  (Keep in mind that one side of my face was numb, so I couldn't actually feel the "goo," but there was so much, I could see it out of the corner of my eye!)  He stated that the bottom one turned out this time, but that he had to try the top one once more, and he apologized for making such a mess of me.  He left the room again, this time coming back to tell me that it had finally worked.  However, by this time, he was obviously a little distraught, and kept apologizing as he dampened a paper towel and began wiping off my face for me.  As he finished and apologized once more, in an effort to help change the mood and put a smile on his face, I responded (and this is the punch line in case you're wondering), "Well, you definitely made an IMPRESSION."

Hope this made you smile!

More of Me Monday: The One Thing I'm Perfect At....

is being IMPERFECT.  It's taken me almost 32 years to begin to realize that I'm human....okay, not really, but one thing I've struggled with throughout my life is PERFECTIONISM.   Looking back, I can see I've been a perfectionist from the time I was a child.  I mean, how many of you as a child cried when you got an A- on your report card?  I did!  In my little child eyes, it was too close to a B!  And how many of you went to school even when you were sick because you wanted to have perfect attendance?  I did!  And I'm not just talking one year....how about Preschool through my Senior year?!  (Don't worry....I've taken plenty of sick days since being in the working world).

Whether these perfectionist tendencies stem from being the oldest child or are just part of my personality or were passed down from parents (I won't mention any names, mom), or whether it's a combination of these, one thing I know is that there is no doubt that it has, and continues to, affect my life.  While I used to think that being a perfectionist was the best way to be (after all it's helped me reach some high goals), in the last few years, I've begun to realize that it also has a negative side, that it's actually kept me from reaching some of my goals, and at times, from LIVING LIFE.  You see, perfectionism has kept me from participating in many activities over the years because if I'm not confident that I'm good at something, I'd rather not do it at all.  I couldn't bear to think that I might....do I dare say.... FAIL?!  Or at least that's how I saw it.  I couldn't bear to think that others might see that....I'M HUMAN.  (Hmmm....my guess is that they already knew that).

Even as an adult, it has affected my life.  For instance, after building our house a few years ago, I didn't want to have anyone over until our house was just perfect, so for a couple years, no one really got to see our brand new house!  I mean, what would people think if I had a speck of dust on a shelf or if not every area was perfectly decorated?  Well, they'd probably think that I'M HUMAN (if they even noticed those things!).  I've now come to realize that there is no such thing as a "perfect house" and it will likely always be a WORK IN PROGRESS.  And yes, we've had lots of people over in the last couple years.

Perfectionism has affected me in other ways, too.  You've heard the saying, "If you can't do something right, don't do it at all," or is that "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"?  Well, either way, I've taken it to a whole new level.  If I can't do something perfectly (or what I view to be perfect), I don't do it at all!  Makes sense to you, doesn't it?  Okay, me neither, when I really stop to think about it.  (And, by the way, RIGHT and PERFECT are not the same thing!)

Just to give you a few examples, if I don't have time to perfectly clean a room, I don't even start cleaning it.  I guess really dirty is better than only half dirty?  Not the most logical thinking!  And I bet you'd think that since I'm such a perfectionist that I eat a  perfect diet & exercise every day for the perfect amount of time with my heart at the perfect rate.  Ha! Wrong! Instead, I tend to go through cycles of trying to do everything just right, but when I "fall off the wagon", I usually think that since I've already missed a workout or eaten something "bad", I've already ruined the day, or more often, the week, so I continue to eat "bad" or not workout until I decide to start over....which is usually either a Sunday or the beginning of a new month (because it has to be the perfect time).  Now wouldn't it make more sense to just get back up & keep going so that I don't totally negate all the hard work I've already put in?  After all, if you get a flat tire, what do you do?  You fix it and keep driving (or at least put a spare on as a temporary fix 'til you can get to the root of the problem and get it taken care of).  You don't say , "Well since I have one flat tire, I think I'll just poke holes in all my other tires, too!"

It even carries over to my Bible reading.  For the last 3 years, I've wanted to read the Bible through in chronological order (the order in which the events actually happened) in one year.  I even bought a one-year chronological Bible with daily readings a couple years ago.  So every year I start out in January following my plan, but by February or March, I've usually missed a few days here and there, and because I feel like it's impossible to catch up, I just give up and decide I'll start over next January.  Yes, this has happened for about 3 years now!   Again, not very logical!

So this year when January rolled around, I did some thinking.  I decided that I wanted to do things DIFFERENTLY....after all, you can't keep doing the same things the same way and expect different results.  So this year, rather than making the same New Year's resolutions I seem to make every year, I decided that I need to work on changing my MINDSET.  I need to change my ALL-OR-NOTHING thinking.  I need to not let FEAR....fear of failure....fear of rejection....fear of imperfection...keep me from LIVING LIFE.  In the past, my perfectionism has often paralyzed me & actually kept me from making progress.  This year PROGRESS, not perfection, is my goal.

Over time, I've learned that perfectionism often comes from the need for APPROVAL and ACCEPTANCE....from myself and from others.  While I know that I have a long way to go, my prayer is that this year God will begin to help me see things through His eyes... to see myself through His eyes and to see others through His eyes.  If I begin to see myself through God's eyes, maybe, just maybe, I can begin to love & accept myself a little more....imperfections and all.  After all, when the Bible speaks of loving your neighbor as yourself, it first assumes that you love yourself.  It's virtually impossible to focus your efforts on truly loving & reaching out to others if you're consumed with winning their APPROVAL!  Interestingly, as I was thinking about this, I realized that it's my friends who don't put on a "perfect" front, who are transparent, who can laugh at themselves...those are the friends who are the most endearing, who I most enjoy being around, who I can most relate to.  Those are the friends who make me feel the most LOVED.  Hmmm...could it be that my need to look perfect, my need for approval, actually does the opposite?

Now, don't get me wrong, I think that God very much wants us to always strive to be better, but my idea of better (or perfect) is very different from God's!  So this year, my desire and prayer is that I am to God what my house is to me...a WORK IN PROGRESS.

Oh and by the way, in case you're wondering about that Bible reading thing.  Well this year, I decided to go at my own pace....even if it takes two or three years.  And guess what? I'm finding that I'm learning and growing so much more!  Although some days I read a few chapters, other days God has so much to say to me through just a few verses that I don't make it past one chapter!  Hmm...actually learning and growing (and PROGRESSING) from my time with God?  Now that makes PERFECT sense!

Just a few scriptures that came to mind while I was writing this:
Romans 12:2
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be TRANSFORMED by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and PERFECT will.

Isaiah 55:8
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord.

Isaiah 64:8
Yet, O Lord, you are our Father.  We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of you hand.

Romans 3:23
...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...
